My New Single
I’m sorry I haven’t written for awhile! I’ve been very busy with the album release of “Shake The Tree.” July has been a month of exciting developments. I played my first ever show with a full 56-piece orchestra backing me for the BBC “Friday Night Is Music Night” hosted by Ken Bruce, which went out live on Radio 2. I also went back to Ireland (after too much time away), and performed on Ian Dempsey’s Breakfast show on Today FM and Pat Kenny’s show on RTE1. Last weekend I went to Liverpool to play in front of 20,000 Smooth Radio fans, with the sun shining and a gorgeous view onstage of the docks. This coming weekend I will be performing in Hyde Park for the BT London Live events surrounding the Olympics. As many as 50,000 are expected to attend.
But what I really wanted to tell you (so you’d be the first to know) is
that my next single will be “Sirens.” This song is very dear to my heart, and took me a decade to be able to write. As you know, I’m a New Yorker through and through. I was born in Brooklyn and have been living in Greenwich Village for the past eleven years. I was there on September 11, 2001, a day that haunts me still. It changed my life immeasurably and influenced me both artistically and personally in every sense, but I avoided writing about it since my emotions were still too raw. When the ten year anniversary came around though, I realized I was ready. For this song, I was most inspired by the idea of rebirth and rebuilding from the literal and figurative rubble, and of course my love of New York City, the place where I was born and raised. The scars will never go away, but the wounds will heal, and in times of great adversity humanity will always shine through. What you get to after the end of a tragedy is what inspires the refrain, “from the sound of Sirens, love will survive.”
This weekend in an East London warehouse, we’ll be shooting the performance part of the video for “Sirens,” which we’ll intercut with footage we shot of NYC earlier this summer when the filmmakers came to town. After that, I’ll be flying back to the States for a little break. I’m back touring again in the end of August, playing the Electric Picnic festival in Ireland on 31 August, and in London on 13 September. Thanks for all the wonderful emails I’ve gotten about the album. Hope you are having a great summer and see you out there again soon.
